Independent Living Canada has developed an Accreditation Process for its member Centres. The Accreditation process is also applied when Centres want to move from Centre Under Development status to become an Accredited ILC. All Centres who want to maintain their accredited status must undergo this organizational review every three years.

The accreditation process is an opportunity for IL Centres to review and to improve their activities, goals and directions and to ensure that IL values and principles are being maintained. This helps Centres and Independent Living Canada to demonstrate accountability in the community. There are various steps to the process which includes a self-assessment exercise, focus groups and consultations with staff, board members, consumers and community partners. This provides various stakeholders with an opportunity to share ideas about how the Centre has been meeting needs in the community and how it could be better in the future.
