Allan Simpson Award

This award commemorates Allan Simpson, one of the founding members of the IL Movement in Canada. His work for and involvement in ILC was exemplary. Allan Simpson not only shared a passion for the promotion of Independent Living across Canada, but also lived IL to the fullest on a daily basis.  The Allan Simpson Award for Programming is presented to an Independent Living Center that takes an innovative approach to a particular project/program based on the fundamental principles of Independent Living.

The project/program should:

Demonstrate strong leadership using the Independent Living philosophy;

  • Increase the profile of Independent Living in the community;
  • Be transferable to other IL Center across Canada in ways that are unique to each particular Center;
  • Include persons with cross disabilities in meaningful ways.

Process for Nomination

A letter (approx 1000 words) must be submitted to IL Canada’s Public Policy / Government Relations Committee telling us the story of the evolution and development of this program/project, including lessons learned, and the impact of this project/program on persons with disabilities in your community and nationally;

Include clear examples:

  • Center may nominate another center or self nominate;
  • Member of IL Centre staff or Board may nominate;
  • Consumer may nominate;
  • Community/ associate partner in a project may nominate.

Nominations may be submitted by mail, fax, or email.
