Independent Living Canada is a national non-profit association of Independent Living Centres run by and for people with disabilities. The Independent Living vision and philosophy are articulated through the Independent Living movement, a network of individuals and community-based resource centres across the country. Independent Living Canada promotes and supports the development of Independent Living Centres, IL programs, and provides education and leadership for its member organizations, partners, governments and communities.
Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the National Director will:
♦ Promote and facilitate the growth and development of the Canadian Independent Living movement by:
♦ Communicating, promoting and modelling IL philosophy, values, vision and work of the IL Centres at the national level.
♦ Providing leadership to foster the growth and sustainability of the national network of Independent Living Centres.

♦ Oversee the successful management and operation of Independent Living Canada by:
♦ Implementing strategies to promote and advance the organization’s vision, purpose, goals and objectives.
♦ Providing sound leadership, management and administration to the organization, consistent with policies established by the Board.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
♦ Personal and professional values consistent with Independent Living Canada’s vision, mission and values
♦ Ability to conduct all activities/responsibilities in fluent French and English.
♦ Lived and/or professional experience in the disability rights and/or Independent Living sector/community.
♦ Five or more years experience in a management position, working with a volunteer Board of Directors.
♦ Post secondary training in administration, management, education or the social sciences. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

♦ Management, including organizational skills, attention to detail, multitasking and delegating.
♦ Community leadership (volunteer or paid);
♦ Understanding and application of the principles of community economic development and outcomes based strategies and approaches
♦ Principles and practices relating to organizational development, project management and change management.
♦ Build and maintaining effective relationships in varying environments and with varying tasks, responsibilities, and people
♦ Working with community, government, corporate and academic sectors.
♦ Financial management, including ability to understand and analyze financial data.
♦ Facilitation, verbal and written communication.
♦ Supervision, leadership and motivation of paid staff and volunteers.
♦ Partnership development, network building and fund development.
♦ Ability to use the MS Office package, internet and e-mail applications.
♦ Independent initiative and ability to be proactive in a team environment.
