ILCanada support for ILCenters

Becoming a member of IL Canada enables IL Center's to access a variety of services and supports.

Being part of the national voice of the Independent Living Movement enables IL Centers to participate in information sharing, mutual support and peer networking.

We help our Centers to stay connected with each other and to ensure that consumers have maximum information about various issues related to disability issues and Independent Living. Newsletters and updates are distributed to Centers so that consumers, Board members and staff can build their understanding of Independent Living and the issues that affect Canadians with disabilities.

Other means are also used to keep the IL Movement growing stronger. IL Canada seeks opportunities to develop resources and tools that assist Centers with core program activities, Board development work and promotion of Independent Living.

Centers in all kinds of different communities experience many barriers as they try to meet the needs of consumers. IL Canada Services and Development component supports them when they encounter organizational challenges. The IL Canada staff problem solve with IL Centers staff, Board and volunteers to empower them to find solutions to a variety of issues related to the operation of their Centers.

In addition, the national office articulates the needs of the Independent Living Movement at the national level. As a national organization we explore projects and partnerships with various sectors that enable us to work towards our goals and to attain our vision. Consumers of Independent Living Centers increase their sense of national participation and citizenship through their local involvement in an Independent Living Centers.

Accredited member Centres are also eligible to participate and to vote at our National Annual General Meetings. This provides them with an opportunity to have a voice in the governance of the national movement.
