Our Network of Independent Living Resource Centres
Independent Living becomes a reality for individuals through the support offered by an Independent Living Resource Centres (ILRCs). ILRCs are located in communities from coast to coast.
Independent Living Resource Centres are set up to empower people with disabilities through providing options, individual control over decision making, skills development and peer support. Each ILRC is non-profit, disability-led,cross-disability focussed, community-based, and committed to the full citizenship of all Canadians with disabilities, regardless of disability. The by-laws of Independent Living Resource Centres require that a majority of staff and Board positions must be held by people with disabilities.
IL core programs are focussed on:
Information and Networking: providing clear and up-to-date information on resources and options accessible to everyone and promoting IL to consumers, their families, friends, community and support networks and to government.
Individualized Self-Advocacy and Skills Development: offering opportunities for self-help, learning skills, personal growth, individual empowerment, dealing with barriers and discrimination and taking control of their lives.
Peer Support: sharing knowledge from life experience, developing leadership skills, reducing individual isolation and supporting rights and responsibilities.
